Area Businessman Proposes Pedal Boat Rental Facility In Dunkirk

DUNKIRK — This summer is expected to be an exciting one for Wright Park with new amenities completed. One local businessman wishes to give families one more thing to do.

“There are a lot of great improvements that are going to be happening at Wright Park, a lot of people utilize its beaches now and (this developer) would like to possibly set up a pedal boat rental facility at Wright Park beach,” Development Director Rebecca Yanus said.

Darnell Baldwin, owner of Just Like New Inc., proposed a paddle boat and kayak rental business, similar to those seen at other beaches and Canalside in Buffalo.

“The idea is we want to utilize the little beachfront area where the surf boards (near the Beach Hut) are normally located, clean that up, bring in some fresh sand and really create a fun atmosphere for families that are here and people that normally vacation here for the summer,” he explained.

He said the business would be open starting Memorial Day only on weekends until school let out in late June when the business would start seven-day-a-week operations.

“Right now we’re projecting to lease or order around 10 paddle boats, about five to seven kayaks and then we have some other types of equipment like the bikes, nothing that requires a motor, anything safe and fun that age four to a senior citizen could use and get some exercise. It would be something nice and fun and different and draw people to our community,” Baldwin added.

He said the idea came when he found himself leaving town to do things with his family.

“Being in the community going on 12 years now, I’ve realized whenever I want to do something with my kids, we either have to go out to Erie or Buffalo. I’ve been to different areas where they have these things, whether it’s right on the lake or right next to a beachfront area and they’ve brought so many people just by being around,” he said.

In addition he presented on plans to hold free community events — from sand castle contests, a glow party and volleyball for kids, to evening movies, yoga, zumba and breakfast on the beach. He also has older kids in mind with an intent to hire high school students to keep them productive and put some money in their pockets.

He said his start up cost for the boats, removable rubber docks and “lemonade-style” stand is estimated around $10,000 with possibly an extra $5,000 for some of the other proposed activities like the cinema. Insurance would be an additional $1,500.

Councilman-at-Large Andy Woloszyn asked if the choppiness of the open water is a concern. Baldwin assured him similar businesses operate in similar conditions across the country. In addition, he said a certified life guard would keep customers in a safe, restricted area.

Baldwin mentioned he is also interested in expanding the business to Point Gratiot beach in the future.

“Mr. Baldwin, I appreciate you looking into opening a business here in the city of Dunkirk and I also appreciate your concern for the community and also residents here. Thank you very much and good luck on your endeavor,” Economic Development Committee Chair, Third Ward Councilman Shaun Heenan said.
