BROCTON — The Village of Brocton welcomed a new Village Clerk and Treasurer to the table recently. The board of trustees also accepted with regret, resignations from the alternate judge and a key village committee member.

Clerk and treasurer Scott Jagoda was officially appointed and sworn in before the new year, allowing him to officially fill the duties of outgoing clerk Sonia Lusczak. Board members also accepted Judge Richard Delcamp’s resignation as alternate village justice with regret, and former trustee Gary Planty’s resignation from a power related committee he had been assisting with.

Mayor Richard Frost also noted that condolences are offered from Brocton’s board to the leaders and residents of Salamanca, following the tragic death of Salamanca’s town supervisor and his wife, the town’s clerk as the result of a hit-and-run accident. Mayor Frost related that he and the trustees can relate to the loss as Brocton/Portland is a small and close-knit community like Salamanca.

In other matters, the board reviewed the November fire department activity report for the Brocton Fire Department presented by Fire Chief Phil Gerace. According to the report, the department averaged at least one call per day throughout November, which included six mutual aid calls to Portland and one to Westfield. Most of the calls responded to by Brocton members were inside village EMS calls and work detail/service calls. The chief reported that a Nov. 15 flood of Lake Avenue saw members assisting with over 100 man hours working to help residents pump basements because of the flooding.

The board tabled the discussion of the renewal of the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s contract for enhanced police protection inside the village, in the absence of Trustee Craig Miller. The board did unanimously resolve to issue payment for work performed by Kandey Corporation, who has providing work on Contract 1 of the Route 5 portion of water main replacement between the beginning of October to the end of November. The pay request was authorized in the amount of $1,035,258.20.

Board members were presented with the pay request requiring Mayor Frost’s signature and were updated on work progress by engineering liaison Seth Krull of Clark Patterson Lee, who is the lead engineer for the work being done.

Village Hall extended a safe and happy holiday season to Brocton and Portland residents and will reconvene for their next business meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
