Second Bomb Threat Closes Thompson Hall
For the second time in nine days, a bomb threat cleared Thompson Hall at the State University of New York at Fredonia Thursday.
Following a search by police, the threat was deemed unfounded.
An evacuation commenced just after 7 p.m. as police arrived for a reported bomb threat. A perimeter was subsequently set up around the building to keep individuals away from the scene.
K-9 units from several agencies arrived shortly after and began the search inside the building. Police were inside for a little more than two hours.
Around 9:15 p.m., the school sent out a message stating the building was clear. Normal activities and classes will resume today.
During the search, police were spotted taking out what appeared to be a partition from a bathroom stall. Custodial staff who were inside the building at the time said the threat was found in the women’s bathroom.
Assisting at the scene were University Police, Fredonia Police, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, Lakewood-Busti Police, Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and Fredonia Fire Department.
Thursday evening’s scare comes after a bomb threat cleared Thompson Hall on the afternoon of Oct. 17. The building was cleared after police searched inside for a little more than an hour.
On Friday, State University of New York at Fredonia President Virginia Horvath asked for assistance of the campus community.
In a letter to faculty and staff, Horvath called the threats “frightening and disturbing.” She also warns of punishment for those who made the threats.
