City Officials Approve Loan For Coffee Roasting Business

The smell of roasted coffee beans will soon be making its way around Third Street in downtown Jamestown.

On Thursday, the Jamestown Local Development Corporation approved a loan for Michael and Sarah Bigney to open Crown Street Roasting Company, which will be a coffee shop that features the roasting of raw coffee beans. The new business will be located at 20 W. Third St. and will offer customers drip and pour coffee drinks, espresso-based drinks, specialty teas, hot chocolate and light snacks like fruit, yogurt and pastries provided by local bakers. Roasted coffee beans will be sold for wholesale accounts and retail sales as well.

The owners of Crown Street Roasting Company are Jamestown residents who last November first attempted to sell their roasted coffee beans during the Holiday On The Hill craft show, which is a fine arts and craft fundraiser to benefit Court Appointed Special Advocate who provide a volunteer’s voice in court for children.

“We did the craft show to see how it would go over, and it went really well,” Sarah Bigney said. “We made a lot of connections and had a lot of repeat business from that craft show.”

Michael Bigney said he started roasting coffee beans two years ago and enjoyed the experience so much he started providing it for free to friends and family. After awhile, he said his friends and family would no longer accept the free gift, but wanted to pay for the roasted coffee beans, which is when he created a business website –crownstreetroasting.com — to accept sales.

“I love making coffee and was intrigued by the whole process,” he said. “When I started out, I never thought it would turn out this way. I just thought it was the best tasting coffee I ever had. Anything on top of that is a bonus.”

Michael Bigney said the business will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

“We’re very excited to be a part of the renaissance Jamestown is going through,” he said.

There will be plenty of seating inside the coffee shop, which will also feature three tables outside during warmer months.

“We are really excited and want to be a part of what is happening downtown,” Sarah Bigney said.

The loan approved by the Jamestown Local Development Corporation for Crown Street Roasting Company is for $35,000 at 5 percent interest for five years. The Jamestown Renaissance Corporation has also granted the business owners $20,000 and will be providing a $10,000 loan at 5 percent for five years. The owners will also be investing $21,700 into the business. The total cost of the project is $86,770.

Vince DeJoy, city development director, said $166,000 is the projected first year sales for the business, which will have one full-time employee and three part-time workers.

“Crown Street Roasting Company will help to create the vibrancy we are looking for to fill a key business location in the downtown,” DeJoy said.
