For 70 years the Jamestown community has been joining together to offer a fun springtime activity for boys and girls.

At 10:30 a.m. Saturday the Jamestown Parks, Recreation and Conservation Commission will host the 70th Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Allen Park. The Easter egg hunt will be divided into three separate age groups: children 9-12 years of age; children 5-8 years of age; and children under 4.

City officials will announce by Thursday whether the egg hunt will take place outside by the playgrounds or will be moved inside the Allen Park Ice Rink. Julia Ciesla-Hanley, city recreation coordinator, said Thursday the weather forecast looks favorable for the event to be held outside.

”It is a great way to kick off springtime after wintertime in Jamestown,” she said.

More than 3,000 eggs filled with candy will be hidden in the hunt area. In addition, 36 toy prize eggs and two gold and two silver eggs will be hidden. The silver and gold egg prizes are sponsored through a donation in memoriam of Mark Hess. The silver eggs will contain a $50 Wal-Mart gift card and the gold eggs will hold a $100 Wal-Mart gift card.

The Child Advocacy Program of Chautauqua County will donate six stuffed animals to be given away as prizes as well. The Easter Bunny will arrive by fire truck to kick off the event.

Assisting in sponsoring the hunt is the Sertoma Club of Jamestown; Allen Park Women’s Club; Morton Club; Kendall Club Police Benevolent Association Inc.; Jamestown Bowling Company; McDonald’s; Media One Group; and Linda Crossley at Esquire Cleaners. Girl Scout Troop 20029 juniors helped stuff all 3,000 eggs with candy.

”This is a community supported (event) all the way around,” Ciesla-Hanley said.

All children 12 years of age and under are invited to attend. For more information, contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 483-7523.
