A Jamestown man faces second-degree assault charges after allegedly hitting another person in the head with a hammer during an argument.
Austin T. Thayer, 29, of Jamestown was charged with second-degree felony assault, third-degree felony criminal possession of a weapon, felony tampering with physical evidence and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance at 12:53 a.m. Wednesday.
Officers responded to an east side home for a report of an assault. One person was found with a severe cut to his head. Thayer had allegedly hit the other person in the head with a hammer, causing the injury. Officers found Thayer inside the residence and, while police were arresting Thayer, he allegedly tried to ingest a controlled substance before allegedly throwing the substance in the toilet. During an inventory of Thayer’s property, officers allegedly found fentanyl.
Thayer was taken to the city jail until he could be arraigned.
