One Injured After Jet Watercraft Collision In Chautauqua
CHAUTAUQUA — A pair of 20-year-olds were involved a personal jet watercraft incident with one sustaining injuries on Saturday afternoon.
Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies report Daniel I. Miller of Panama and Andrew R. Wengerd of Clymer were operating the vessels at a moderate speed and circling each other around 2:15 p.m. near Prendergast Point. They lost visual contact and one struck the other broadside causing extensive hull damage to one watercraft. The primary vessel was not damaged. The vessel struck broadside was operated by Wengerd. He sustained a large laceration to his foot and a possible broken toe, and initial shock, which was treated at the scene by deputies and friends. He stated he did not want any medical personnel called and would care for himself.
The cause of the incident was new operators, on newly purchased vessels they were not familiar with, with newly obtained Boater Safety Certificates. No summonses were issued.
