Fredonia Police Investigating Early Morning Stabbing

Fredonia police say a woman suffered stab wounds in an assault early Wednesday.

In a news release, the department said it received a frantic 911 call at about 4:20 a.m. Dispatch learned the call came from a 90 Wisteria Dr. residence in the village of Fredonia.

Upon arrival, officers encountered “sounds of screaming” and occupants of the residence fleeing. The department said officers also were confronted by a “man displaying a 12 inch knife, threatening to stab and kill police officers.”

An investigation found that the man, who was not identified, entered the victim’s apartment through a rear window that he smashed. He then stabbed the woman with the 12-inch knife.

“When the police arrived, he charged the police, displaying the knife,” Fredonia police said. “Several attempts to communicate with the aggressive male were made, as he ran and walked through-out the housing complex.

“He then stabbed himself in the arm. Officers maintained contact with the male subject, until he surrendered after becoming weak from the self-inflicted laceration.”

The victim was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital for treatment of defensive stab wounds.

According to police, the male was transported by helicopter to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

An investigation remains ongoing.

“Due the size and nature of the incident, the Fredonia Police were assisted by the City of Dunkirk Police, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police, and the University Police of Fredonia. Their cooperation and assistance was greatly appreciated.”
