A man whose body was discovered this week in Jamestown had been reported missing over the summer by his family.

Jamestown police on Wednesday identified the man as Clarence L. Kelwaski Jr.

The 51-year-old was reported missing Aug. 11 from Saratoga Springs where Kelwaski had been admitted into a drug treatment program.

In a news release, police said Kelwaski signed himself out after about six weeks of treatment and had not been in contact with his family since.

The partially decomposed remains of a white male were found around noon Monday in a wooded area behind the 100 block of East Second Street.

Members of the Chautauqua County Forensic Investigation Team as well as a county coroner responded to an area behind East First Street.

Crime scene tape and barricades were placed on both East First and Second streets.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday morning at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo in an attempt to determine the cause of death.

According to JPD, the official autopsy results are pending further medical tests.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Clarence Kelwaski,” said Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department. “We are working to find out how he may have returned back to Jamestown. We do not believe he took public transportation and may have received a ride from someone in the Jamestown area to return back to Jamestown. We would like that person or persons to contact us.”
