RIPLEY — A man reported to be the captain of a charter fishing boat fell into the water near Ripley on Thursday morning.

Several agencies, including the county Dive Team and U.S. Coast Guard, were made aware of the water emergency on Lake Erie around 8:30 a.m. Along with county crews, firefighters from Ripley and North East, Pa., responded with equipment to Barcelona Harbor to launch.

Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone told The Post-Journal the man, believed to be the captain of the charter fishing boat, had went into the water and did not resurface. There were four other people said to be on the boat, all of whom were later brought back to the shore.

The search remained ongoing as of noon.
