KENNEDY — Search efforts have continued for a 46-year-old man who did not resurface after entering Conewango River near Kennedy on Sunday evening.
Members of the New York State Police dive team, along with a bevy of local agencies and first responders, were attempting to locate the man who reportedly was with a group in canoes when he entered the water. The man, who James O’Callaghan with the New York State Police said is not from the area, did not resurface after his canoe is believed to have overturned.
O’Callaghan wasn’t certain of the circumstances that led to the man’s canoe to encounter trouble. Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone earlier Monday said the canoe struck a log jam in the river.
Kennedy firefighters were called to the river’s edge, near Routes 394 and 62, around 7 p.m. on Sunday. Shortly after search efforts began, several boats and ATVs were requested to the scene.
Members of the county’s water and tech rescue crews responded, and first responders could be seen along the river Sunday night.
No other injuries were reported.
O’Callaghan said the New York State Police, which is heading the search with plenty of local assistance, has been in contact with the man’s family.
