A 66-year-old Sheridan man who was rescued from Lake Erie after a fall Tuesday has died, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office announced.

First responders were summoned to an area off Route 5 around 10 a.m. for reports of a man who had fallen from a cliff. In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said Gregory L. Meadows fell about 50 feet to the shoreline of the lake.

Crews from several departments, including Sheridan and Sunset Bay, responded to the shoreline. Using water crafts, Meadows was rescued and moved to a waiting ambulance. The Sheridan resident was then transported to a local hospital “where he was later pronounced deceased due to the injuries that he sustained,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
