The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said it has received “several reports” of poor ice conditions as well as people partially falling through the ice. As a result, the department is reminding residents and visitors of the potential hazardous conditions on Chautauqua Lake and the other bodies of water.

“Warm weather conditions this past week and heavy amounts of snow on the ice have poorly affected the ice conditions,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “Please use caution if traveling on the ice, wear a floatation device, avoid creeks and streams. Regarding snowmobiles on the ice the Sheriff’s Office highly discourages any travel on the waterways. Currently all snowmobile trails are open in Chautauqua County that are well maintained by the local snowmobile clubs.

For updates on changing conditions, the Sheriff’s Office is directing people to local snowmobile clubs’ websites, Facebook pages, or NYSSA Interactive Trail Map. Snowmobiles must be registered in New York state, insured, and properly equipped to travel on the snowmobile trails.
