The health department on Thursday reported 40 new cases of COVID-19, along with a new virus-related death.

There are currently 260 active cases, eight people with the virus in the hospital, 500 people in quarantine and a seven-day positivity rate of 8.9%. The CDC level of community transmission locally remains high.

There have been 10,0117 total confirmed cases, 9,692 recoveries and 165 virus-related deaths.

Of the new cases, from information collected Wednesday, 13 came from the Jamestown zip code; six from Dunkirk; four in Brocton; two each in Fredonia, Irving, Ashville and Frewsburg; and one each in Clymer, Lakewood, Mayville, Panama, Portland, Sinclairville and Westfield.

Since Aug. 1, there have been 773 new cases in Chautauqua County. According to the health department, 62% of those cases have involved people not vaccinated; 17% who were fully vaccinated; 5% partially vaccinated; and 16% whose vaccination status was not known.
