Police Investigating Vandalism Of Statues

Investigators are looking into the vandalism of two statues at Dow Park in Jamestown, months after a piece that was part of a series recognizing the local Underground Railroad movement was stolen.

The Jamestown Police Department on Sunday said “anti-Semitic and anti African American” messages were recently drawn on the statues, created by the late David Poulin titled “Underground Railroad Tableau.” The messages included “White Power” and a Nazi symbol.

Members of the city Parks Departments later cleaned off the imagery.

“The hateful, racist, anti-Semitic act of vandalism on the Underground Railroad tableau is detestable, and morally reprehensible,” said Timothy Jackson, chief of the Jamestown Police Department.

Jamestown police said it, along with the FBI, will be investigating the vandalism.

It comes after one of the three-piece series was stolen in May. That particular copper statue had just recently been cleaned, with the assistance of the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, and re-installed. City Parks Department employees realized that the statue was missing and contacted the police department.

The piece has yet to be recovered.

Anyone with any information regarding the vandalism or theft is asked to contact JPD or the tips line at 483-Tips (8477). “This incident will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent to the law,” the department said.
