New York state is launching a new initiative to vaccinate farm workers.

The plan is to create mobile vaccination clinics that will travel to farms and administer vaccines to farmers and workers at their place of business.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement while speaking at an apple orchard in Orange County.

“We understand that agricultural workers have demanding schedules, we tend to be in rural parts of the state, it’s hard to get to a vaccination site,” Cuomo said.

“We’ll bring the vaccination site to you. We’re going to start mobile vaccination sites and they’ll come to farms and vaccinate the workers and managers on-site because we need to get vaccinated, please.”

Cuomo has taken criticism from advocates and the New York Farm Bureau for not vaccinating farm workers much earlier, as an essential link in the food supply.

Migrant workers will be included the program, according to the governor.

He didn’t specifically mention workers who are in the country without legal papers, which include hundreds of workers on North Country dairy farms.

The mobile vaccination program will start on April 21st in Orange County.
