More Than 800 County Residents Have Received J&J Vaccine
A total of 807 Chautauqua County residents have received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine from the county Health Department. For now, that number will not be permitted to go up.
According to the Associated Press, the U.S. on Tuesday recommended a “pause” in using the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine to investigate reports of rare but potentially dangerous blood clots, setting off a chain reaction worldwide and dealing a setback to the global vaccine campaign.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration announced that they were investigating unusual clots that occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination. The acting FDA commissioner said she expected the pause to last a matter of days.
According to Christine Schuyler, Chautauqua County public health director and commissioner of Social Services, of the 807 county residents that have received the J&J vaccine from her office, 135 were in the last three weeks. She does not know how many other providers in the county may have used the J&J vaccine, adding the state does not provide that information to them.
“As the FDA and CDC has said, any adverse events related to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine appear to be extremely rare. People who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider,” Schuyler told The Post-Journal.
The county is expected to issue a press release later this afternoon.
