County Nears 9K Confirmed Cases Of COVID

Chautauqua County is closing in on 9,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 24 new cases reported Friday. To date there have been 8,938 confirmed cases of the virus locally.

Of the new cases, 13 were recorded in the Jamestown zip code, two each in Ashville and Sherman and one each in Dunkirk, Fredonia, Brocton, Falconer, Gerry, Lakewood and Westfield.

There are currently 121 active cases along with 12 people with the virus in the hospital, 482 in quarantine and a seven-day positivity rate of 1.5%.

The level of transmission of the virus, according to the Centers of Disease Control, remains at “substantial.” To date there have been 8,668 recoveries and 149 virus-related deaths.

Meanwhile, the Cattaraugus County Health Department reported its 99th virus-related death, the third in the last week. The latest involves a 73-year-old woman who developed respiratory failure.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her family and the entire Cattaraugus County community,” the health department said.

There have been 5,369 total cases in Cattaraugus, as well as 5,058 recoveries. There are currently 211 active cases, 686 in quarantine, 22 hospitalized and a seven-day positivity rate of 2.8%.
