City fire investigators were looking into the cause of a fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon on Myrtle Street. It’s the second such fire in as many days reported on Myrtle.

John Schupp was home around 2:30 p.m. when his neighbor rushed over. “She said there was smoke when she opened the door and asked if I would call 911,” Schupp told The Post-Journal. “I said, ‘You stay in the house here with my wife, I’ll call the fire department. Don’t go in the house until they come.'”

Jamestown firefighters arrived and encountered heavy smoke when they entered the property. No flames were visible from the outside, and in about 10 minutes, much of the heavy smoke had abated.

The homeowner was lone occupant, and there were no injuries, Deputy Chief Matthew Coon said.

On Tuesday, fire was reported around 12:15 p.m. inside the basement of 33 Myrtle St., between Newland and Columbia avenues. Jamestown firefighters, who assisted three adults evacuate, quickly doused the flames though smoke could be seen coming from several windows of the multi-unit property.

The home sustained significant damage, and the Red Cross was called to assist.
