No New Cases Of Virus Reported In County
MAYVILLE — No new cases of the coronavirus were reported Friday by the Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services.
The number remains at 29, County Executive PJ Wendel said during his weekly press conference in Mayville.
As of Friday afternoon, two active cases remain, with 72 people either in quarantine or isolation.
Of the tests administered, 698 have come back negative.
Wendel said the last person to be hospitalized due to COVID-19 was on April. He noted that local hospitals have not faced the same inundation in patients seen elsewhere, most notably New York City.
Christine Schuyler, county public health director, addressed concerns of reopening the economy during the coronavirus pandemic. She said if “hotspots” were to break out while businesses begin to reopen, officials can again curtail interaction.
“This will be a slow and methodical process,” Schuyler said.
Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone addressed the recent spike in drug overdoses while stay at home orders have been in place. He said to date, 14 overdoses have occurred, with four resulting in death.
Quattrone said his department has seen about an 80% increase in domestic disputes while stay-at-home orders have been in place. He said the number of mental health calls have gone up 100%.
