SALAMANCA -- A rail car accident forced the evacuation and closure of a school in Salamanca early Thursday.
The Salamanca City Central School District said in a statement that the accident occurred on the rail road tracks near Prospect Elementary School and that argon gas may have leaked.
“The school has been shut down and evacuated for the remainder of the school day,” the school district said. “Buses will pick up students and transport them to the high school immediately.”
In a follow up statement, the district said: “All students have been accounted for and have been evacuated from Prospect and are en route to the main campus. Lunches will be served for Prospect students who remain in school. If parents wish to pick up their child you may do so at the High School Auditorium after 10 a.m. Photo ID will be required. Thank you for your patience as this unfolds. We drill and discuss these conditions and the Prospect staff are connsumate PRO’s and make sure our little Warriors are safe, calm and re-assured.
“A rail car accident was not planned but our coordinated responses to environmental emergencies are.”
