The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a winter weather advisory and winter storm watch for much of the Southern Tier.

The winter weather advisory is from 7 p.m. this evening to 10 a.m. Thursday and includes Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario, Allegany and Southern Erie counties. The forecast calls for mixed precipitation, including 1 to 3 inches of snow and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch.

The winter storm watch is in effect from Thursday evening through late Friday night. The weather service is calling for the possibility of snow, with accumulations in excess of 6 inches.

“Travel could be very difficult,” the weather service said. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday and Friday morning commutes. … Periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will result in slippery roads and limited visibilities. Slow down and use caution while driving. Submit snow and ice reports through our website or social media. Begin needed preparations at home or with your vehicle. Travel may become difficult, so plan accordingly.”
