Pair Charged After Pursuit Ends In Westfield

An Ohio man is facing charges after leading police on a high-speed pursuit through Erie and Chautauqua counties.

Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies took 20-year-old Galen A. Steele Jr. into custody after receiving word Friday around 11:15 a.m. from police in Erie County of a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

Deputies were able to locate the vehicle on Route 60 in the town of Pomfret. The vehicle fled and lead deputies into the village of Fredonia.

“Due to the recklessness of the suspect vehicle deputies discontinued the pursuit and lost sight of the vehicle,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The vehicle was later spotted on Route 5 in the town of Portland. Spike strips were deployed, and the vehicle later stopped in the town of Westfield.

Three people ran from the vehicle, two of whom were taken into custody. A K-9 Unit was summoned, and Steele was found in a wooded area.

Steel is facing charges of third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer and first-degree reckless endangerment, among other traffic violations.

A passenger in the vehicle, 21-year-old Lorenzo D. Martinez of Buffalo, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

Two other occupants of the vehicle were released without charges.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Westfield Police Department and the New York State Police.
