MAYVILLE — A countywide crackdown over the Labor Day holiday netted dozens of impaired drivers.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said 61 motorists were either taken into custody or issued appearance tickets from Aug. 14 to Sept. 2. Several law enforcement agencies took part in the initiative, which is part of the New York State STOP-DWI Labor Day Enforcement Crackdown.

“In Chautauqua County, the Chautauqua County Sheriff, municipal law enforcement agencies, and New York State Police vigorously enforce laws related to driving while impaired,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release “They work together to reduce the number of impaired driving injuries and deaths, with special emphasis on driving while impaired by either alcohol or drugs.”

The crackdown is funded by a 2018-19 grant from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Traffic Safety Committee.

Added Sheriff Jim Quattrone: “If you choose to drink, don’t drive. Drunk drivers not only put themselves in danger, they threaten everyone who shares the road with them.”
