(1:15 PM) Assemblyman Giglio Won’t Seek Open State Senate Seat

State Assemblyman Joseph Giglio said he will not seek the state Senate seat recently vacated by Cathy Young.

The Salamanca Press said the Republican has taken himself out of the running for the 57th Senate District. Giglio represents Cattaraugus, Allegany and parts of Steuben counties in the state Assembly.

His Assembly colleague, Andy Goodell, R-Jamestown, also announced recently he will not seek the state Senate seat. Goodell said he still has stuff to do in the state Assembly and was comfortable in his current role.

Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello has already received endorsements for the open seat. This week, Borrello received the backing from the county Republican and Conservative committees. Borrello has expressed interested in running for the position.

The county Democratic Committee has not officially endorsed a candidate.

Young, R-Olean, resigned her longtime position in the state Senate to become director of the Cornell Center For Excellence in Agriculture and Food at Geneva.
