SHERMAN — Several injured calves were found wandering Interstate 86 after they apparently fell out of the back of a truck early Tuesday, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said.

Motorists in New York and Pennsylvania were asked to be on the lookout after sheriff’s deputies were notified of the loose animals in the westbound lane of the interstate in Sherman. Several calves were found to be injured and appeared to have fallen out of the back of a truck.

The first calf was found around 3:50 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Five calves were located in the Sherman area and were taken by a local farmer for the time being. Three other calves were located over the state line in Pennsylvania and were also taken by a local farmer there, the Erie Times News reported citing state police.

Anyone who comes across a loose calf locally is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 753-2131. In Pennsylvania, people are asked to call 814-898-1641.

Starting at $3.50/week.
