A Lakewood man charged last year for stealing a car from a village dealership and crashing it in Florida is facing a host of charges after a high-speed pursuit Tuesday in a stolen vehicle reportedly reached 130 mph on Interstate 86.
Taken into custody was 22-year-old Collin A. Slack after troopers with the New York State Police attempted to stop his sedan for speeding in a 65 mph zone. As the troopers approached the vehicle, Slack allegedly pulled away, traveling westbound on I-86 in excess of 130 mph, the state police said.
The pursuit included the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and Lakewood-Busti Police Department.
“Stop Sticks” were deployed and punctured Slack’s tires near Sherman. After the vehicle became disabled, Slack fled into the woods but was taken into custody about a mile from the interstate.
The Lakewood man was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, second-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree criminal mischief, two counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.
Slack is facing an additional charge of third-degree burglary with the Lakewood-Busti Police Department for a burglary that took place Monday. Details of that incident wasn’t immediately released.
Slack was scheduled to be arraigned in court.
In September, Lakewood-Busti police reported that Slack had broke into a car dealership in the village earlier this year and stole cash and a vehicle. Slack was taken into custody following a pursuit and crash in Florida.
Members of the Lakewood-Busti Police Department and the Chautauqua County Crime Scene Investigation Unit had been investigating a burglary at Jamestown Honda, located on East Fairmount Avenue in Lakewood. Police alleged that Slack — a former employee of the dealership — broke into the dealership and stole cash, a 2018 Honda Accord and a state dealer plate.
The incident occurred in “early 2018,” the Lakewood-Busti Police Department said in a press release.
Investigators learned where Slack was when the Accord passed through a toll booth in Florida. With assistance from Orange County Police, Slack and the car were located. Slack was taken into custody in April 7 after crashing the car during a pursuit.
Slack was charges of burglary, grand larceny, criminal mischief and petit larceny in the earlier incident.
