FREWSBURG — “Providing students with the tools to pursue excellence through the individual self,” reads a mural now displayed outside Frewsburg Central School.

On Friday, the project created by six former FCS seniors who graduated in 2015 was finally available for the community to see. From Institute Street, the colorful mural is visible with various images presented on glass pieces protruding from the brick wall outside the school. The top panel in the picture above was created by Rachel Moller, and the remaining panels, from left, were completed by Greta Gustafson, Macy Smith, Morgan Anderson, Kristen Anderson and Nikki Weber.

Lindsey Vitello, Frewsburg art teacher, said the six students advocated for the creation of a portfolio class after completing every art-related class the district had to offer. In the portfolio class, the group of six proposed the original idea of a massive-culminating final project that would later become the newly installed mural. Three of the six students returned to their alma mater on Tuesday for the official unveiling of the mural during an assembly held in the auditorium. Those students included Gustafson, Smith and Morgan Anderson.

“It’s a rare thing in such a small school to have six seniors whose love and interest in art is so strong,” Vitello said.
