3:45 PM: Reward Offered For Info In Portland Death

PORTLAND — A reward is being offered for information relating to the death of a man who was found in the town of Portland in April.

The nonprofit group Crime Stoppers posted the reward offering on its website relating to the death of 47-year-old Brian Heyden. He was found dead in a wooded area near Corell Creek by a motorist traveling on Route 20 on April 21. It’s believed that Heyden received a ride from a passing motorist in the afternoon of April 20.

In its bulletin, Crime Stoppers noted that Heyden was the victim of a homicide, a detail that has not been released by the New York State Police, which is handling the investigation. The bulletin reads: “A reward of up to $2,500 from Crime Stoppers Buffalo is being offered for information leading to the arrest or indictment of the person(s) responsible for the homicide of Brian Hayden.”

The victim’s last name has appeared as both Heyden and Hayden in the media.

Capt. Eric Balon of the state police told The Post-Journal last week the investigation into Heyden’s death was still ongoing and welcomed any new information.

“If anybody saw anything they think is remotely interesting, we’re more than willing to listen to anybody,” Balon said last week. “We’re actively soliciting any leads or information.”

Police believe Heyden was picked up on Route 20 in the village of Fredonia and traveled west in a white or light colored pickup truck.

Balon did not immediately return a message Saturday confirming that Heyden’s death has officially been ruled a homicide.

Anyone with information or who may have had contact with Heyden are asked to call New York State Police at 665-3114 or e-mail information to crimetip@troopers.ny.gov.

Crime Stoppers said information can also be sent to its Buffalo office at 867-6161.

Starting at $3.50/week.
