LAKEWOOD – The Women's Club of Lakewood held a "Welcome the Year, Wine & Cheese" membership drive open house recently at Marge Basile Johnson’s home.

More than half of the club's members came to connect with familiar faces and guests. The event included snacks, a welcome to new members, renewed memberships and raised money for the 2026-27 Southwestern Central School scholarship fund.

"It's one of the finest organizations in Western New York, and it's probably the longest continuous women's club," said life member Mary Ann Herring.

Treasurer Lynne Gruel expressed enthusiasm about the club's three main pillars: mutual improvement, community service, and social interaction.

Interest groups are at the heart of the Lakewood Women's Club, bringing members together for friendship and fun. Some meet regularly, others less often, with activities like lunch socials, book clubs, and meditation. While a few groups are full, others like the Bridge Group welcome new members. One of the newest groups, the Field Trip Group, is planning its first outing soon to East Aurora.

As summer ends and fall begins, the Lakewood Women's Club extends special appreciation to Mike's Nursery for helping with the plants for the Chautauqua Avenue planters and Elaine Wendleboe for organizing the volunteers. Members also thanked the Lakewood Public Works Department and Chris Certo for watering the plants weekly and for replacing the railroad ties around the Hartley Park sign.

The next Women's Club of Lakewood meeting, titled "Spicing Things Up," will be at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the Chautauqua Federal Credit Union Community Training Center, 110 Mall Blvd., Lakewood.
