Chautauqua County 4-H Youth Development and Purina invite school-aged youth and their families to attend “Unleash Potential: Dog Rescue,” an evening focused on animal welfare, responsible pet ownership and supporting local shelter dogs.
The program will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Jamestown Community College Carnahan Center, 241 James Ave., Jamestown. For the safety of the demonstration dogs, those attending are asked to leave their dog at home. Designed for school-aged youth, the program will feature hands-on activities and presentations that help participants learn about caring for dogs.
Participants will hear from multiple local dog organizations about how organizations are helping the dogs in the community and learn how they can become advocates for animal welfare in their communities. Youth will also have the opportunity to decorate dog cookies as a special enrichment treat for dogs at the shelter.
Attendees are encouraged to bring donation items for the Chautauqua County Humane Society. A list of the shelter’s current needs can be found on the Humane Society’s website at chqhumane.org/needs-list/.
“Unleash Potential: Dog Rescue provides youth with an opportunity to learn about animal welfare while taking action to support local shelter animals,” said Lynne Wahlstrom, 4-H educator. “Thanks to Purina and our community partners, participants will leave with a greater understanding of responsible dog ownership and how they can make a difference right here at home.”
The last event in the Chautauqua County 4-H and Purina: Unleash Potential series will be Dog Wellness Day on Oct. 24 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the JCC Carnahan Center. Youth will learn ways to promote their dogs' health with presentations on enrichment games, the importance of veterinary wellness exams, and how to read dog food bags to be sure their pet is getting the best nutrition.
