2 min read

Members of the Mozart Club recently heard a special program from pianist Emily Boyce and saxophonist Grant Asklar.

Dr. Emily Boyce is a pianist and a professor of piano and other instruments at Buffalo State College., while Grant Asklar is a recent graduate of Western Michigan University, where he matured in saxophone performance.

The program at the Mozart club featured modern and classical music.

Accompanied by Boyce, and performed on tenor saxophone, Askar played "Come as You Are" by African-American composer and saxophonist Stephen Banks. This consisted of four movements, dedicated to the family members of Banks.

Switching to Alto saxophone and again accompanied by piano, the next piece was "Sonata in G minor "(1720)originally written for violin, in four movements by English Baroque composer Henry Eccles. The work followed the traditional slow - fast - slow - fast sonata pattern with deep and lyrical, slow movements, and the fast movements demanding high technical skill, as demonstrated by Asklar.

Completing the program was "Tableaux de Provence" by French composer Paule Charlotte Maurice, a famous five movement musical suite written between 1948 and 1955. This was performed on alto saxophone and accompanied by piano.

The next meeting of the Mozart Club is Oct. 14 at the Marvin Community House. The musical program will be by the Philomel Club of Warren, Pa.
