PANAMA – Harmony Senior Citizens met recently for a tureen dinner with 35 members and three guests present. Guests included Jeremy Phipps, new pastor for Panama Methodist Church and his wife, Laurel, and Peachie James’ niece Elaine visiting from Tucson, Ariz. Hosts for the luncheon included Dottie Enlow, Gary Enlos, Dorothy Erickson, Jan Hinterberger and Barb Potter. Co-chaplain Mary Sweeney, read “Oh Happy Day”, offered the dinner prayer and led the Salute to the Flag.
Following the meal, speaker Dennis Webster gave an interesting history of Lucille Wright and her journey from a young woman in 1922 going on her first flight with General Billy MitcheCa a personal friend of her father, Henry Miller, to becoming the only woman courier pilot in Western New York during World War II under the Civil Air Patrol Program. She transported machine parts and defense personnel . Lucille M. Wright’s major contributions to aviation history include lobbying for new airports, pushing congressional legislation to benefit aviation and the awarding of annual scholarships. The Lucille M. Webster also played a video of Albert Engel, an pioneer aviator who made a significant contribution to early aviation services delivering mail over Chautauqua Lake in a Curtiss hydroplane to transport postcards between several lakeside towns making notable achievement in aviation
Reservations and $12 payment for the turkey dinner in November need to be made at the October meeting. Dottie Enlow reported the Putt Putt/ice cream event is rescheduled to Sept. 24. Ellen Coffaro, United Senior Council representative, said there will be a safe driver's course on Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the North Harmony Senior Center. The cost is $39 Contact her at 716-763-1012 to register. Marty LaFredo won the 50/50 drawing.
The next meeting will be on October 1st at noon for a tureen dinner. Members are asked to bring a dish to pass and their own table service. Hosts include Karen Hurlburt, Betty Johnson and June Whipple. Bingo will follow. All area seniors age 55 and older are welcome and encouraged to attend.
