Bemus Point/Maple Grove Alumni Association holds open house

FLUVANNA – The Bemus Point/Maple Grove Alumni Association recently held its annual open house at the Fluvanna fire hall.

In attendance were individuals from the classes of 1950 through 2026. Mary Turney, alumnus and town historian assistant, spoke about the efforts being made to record all of the veterans buried within the town of Ellery and Fluvanna Cemetery. Patty Rizzo from Maple Grove High School then talked about the research her students are doing about the veterans and the possibility of adding QR codes at area cemeteries so that research and genealogy efforts can be accomplished more thoroughly.

Rayshawn Anderson, a 2026 Maple Grove High School graduate and one of the Class of 2026 Charles and Irene Hallberg Award recipients, received his award and gave a brief description of his future plans. Mattias Kraft was unable to attend but will be presented his award in a separate setting.

Attendees from the earliest classes present were recognized. An alumnus from the Class of 1950 left before the program started. Bouquets of roses were presented to Roger and Mary Ann Jaroszynski Whitford (Class of 1952) and Allen Peterson (Class of 1955). Those attending also celebrated the life of Miriam Price, who was a previous treasurer and longtime member of the association. Other alumni who have passed away this last year were also recognized.

Jane Hautzinger, current treasurer, will be moving out of state. She was thanked for her service to the association and an appeal was put out for a replacement.

Memorabilia and yearbooks were available for individuals to look through and a class listing was present for researching classmates.

The 2027 open house will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Fluvanna Fire Hall. All alumni, and anyone that ever attended, of Bemus Point Central Schools are invited to attend. For more information or to get on our contact list, email bp.mg.alumni@gmail.com .
