UPMC Chautauqua has received support from the Children’s Guild Foundation to help bring the hospital's new Sensory Room and Sensory Cart Initiative to life for pediatric and adolescent patients receiving care at the hospital. The project, expected to be completed in the fall, is designed to provide therapeutic, calming environments and resources that help patients manage stress, anxiety, sensory sensitivities and challenging healthcare experiences.
The sensory room includes specialized equipment and sensory-focused features such as adjustable lighting, tactile experiences, vibration therapy, and interactive tools that promote relaxation, self-regulation, and emotional well-being. In addition, portable sensory carts allow these resources to be utilized in multiple care settings throughout the hospital, ensuring that more children and adolescents can benefit from sensory-based support when and where they need it most.
This initiative was made possible by several donors. Funding was provided by the Children’s Guild Foundation, with additional support from The Golisano Foundation and the WCA Foundation. Together, these organizations have invested in creating a more supportive and healing environment for young patients and their families throughout Chautauqua County.

Research and clinical practice have shown that sensory-based interventions can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and concentration, and provide comfort during healthcare encounters. These new resources will enhance the care experience for children and adolescents across a variety of hospital settings, including behavioral health, emergency care, and pediatric services.
