The Roger Tory Peterson Institute invites the community to celebrate the birthday and legacy of Jamestown native Roger Tory Peterson with two days of special events on Aug. 28-29.
On Friday, Aug. 28, RTPI will offer free museum admission from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with discounts on Peterson field guides and art prints. Throughout the day, visitors can view a looping slideshow featuring images of Roger Tory Peterson, including selections from his extensive bird photography, as well as crafts in the classroom and exhibition scavenger hunts. At 1 p.m., curator Rachael Kosinski will lead a special tour of RTPI's archives and collections, followed by birthday cupcakes at 2 p.m.
The celebration continues Saturday, Aug. 29, with the Bird Day Dash, held in Peterson's honor. RTPI's inaugural benefit run includes a 10K, 5K and kid-friendly Fun Run. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., participants and community members can also enjoy food trucks, a DJ and lawn games.
Proceeds from the Bird Day Dash will support RTPI's work to preserve Peterson's artwork, archives and legacy and to present engaging art exhibitions that educate and inspire a love of nature. Roger’s Bird Day Dash is a part of the Chautauqua Striders Runner of the Year Series.
