Trek for teens runs through region Sunday

Devon Edwards 3,000-mile road trip this summer will pass through Fredonia on Sunday afternoon, but he won’t be stopping for gas.

The 30-year-old Albany native is fueled by a desire to help address the mental health needs of teens and his journey helps raise money to serve those in need.

“Some kids are simply not able to get help,” says Edwards, a licensed professional counselor and endurance athlete. “Too often, the issue isn’t motivation, it’s cost, coverage, lack of consent, or limited resources. The result is that many young people fall through the cracks before they ever receive support.”

Edwards began running May 12 in Boston and hopes to complete his journey by mid-November in Newport, Ore., following a path along Route 20 for the most part.

“We try to avoid the busy main roads,” says Edwards, who is accompanied by his fiancée.

Edwards runs four days a week from 6 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a break that includes a 5,000-calorie diet, a nap, and phone calls to clients as he is working part-time during his journey. He logs about 20 miles in the morning and adds another 12 miles in the evening. He averages about a 15-minute mile pace.

“For me this is faith driven as an opportunity to give back by using my abilities — running — to help teens,” says Edwards. “For me, running is also therapeutic and fun.”

Anyone interested in supporting Edwards can find information on Instagram: @Project.RAAM. His effort is part of Run Across America (RAAM). Money raised goes directly toward To Write Love on Her Arms, a non-profit that funds mental healthcare and provides resources for teens and adolescents who might otherwise go without care.

Starting at $3.50/week.
