Mayville VFW Post 8647 Auxiliary hosts annual ‘Don’t Know Your Partner’ bowling tournament

VFW Auxiliary 8647 in Mayville recently sponsored its 19th annual “Don’t Know Your Partner” bowling tournament to benefit Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care.

Shannon Larson, auxiliary member and event chairman, thanked those who supported the tournament, which raised $8,500 was donated to Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care.

The tournament started 21 years ago when Uncle Bill Larson had a creative idea to curb cabin fever by bowling at Portland Lanes. After that bowling alley closed, the event moved to several other locations. This was the ninth year bowling at Lucky Lanes in Fredonia with 100 bowlers. The event was cancelled for two years due to COVID.

There were many volunteers, lane sponsors, donated auction items and baked goodsBrian Couse and Jim Thomas prepared a buffet dinner back at the VFW post while music was provided by by Jade Giambrone.

Volunteers donated 343 volunteer hours before, during and after the event collecting donations, assisting with the bake sale and Chinese auction, selling raffle tickets, registering bowlers and preparing food.

“This year’s event would not have been successful without the help of our volunteers,” Larson said.

Among the volunteers were Joe Britton, Debbie Cenni, Brian Couse, Donna Dixon, Tom Douglas, Luke Ecker, Steve and Ginger Edwards, John Fafalios, Joanne Hitcolme, Brad Howe, Kathy Jordan, Mike Krause, Carly Larson, Mike Larson, Shannon Larson, Jack and Maryann Lescynski, Jesse Lescynski-Howe, Eileen Martin, Mimi Seiberg, Joe Spas, Alysha Swalm, Jen Tarr, Jim Thomas and Jan Woodfield.

First place winners, with a combined score of 1,001, went to Tylor and Melissa Griswold. Second place was won by Duncan Calhoun and Shannon Larson with a score of 999. Third place honors, with a score of 908, was earned by Doug Johnson and Amy Martin. The three-game low score honor, the most fun honor, was taken by Shayanne Williamson. Charlie Green was the winter of the lottery hat.
