The Mozart Club welcomed the winners of the Josephine Fenton Gifford Scholarship Fund recently, with the six winners playing a variety of musical performances.
Gina Delgado performed “Clarinet Quintet “by Mozart accompanied by Julie Livengood. Gina had made some original arrangements of this piece. A student at Jamestown High School, she participates in band, orchestra, marching band, A cappella and sports. She has been to All State, All County and the State University at Fredonia music camp. Her goal is to be a high school music teacher. Her teachers praise her leadership qualities and her musical ability. Gina has been accepted at Ithaca College,SUNY Fredonia, and Nazareth College.
The next performer was Grant Abbey, double bass, from Fredonia Central School, with a piece by Lloyd Goldstein, “The Way Back”. Grant has played principal bass in the All State Orchestra, Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra and the string orchestra at Tanglewood. His goal is to perform professionally in an orchestra. He has been accepted at Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.
Emma Daigle, soprano at Cassadaga Valley Central School, sang “Après un Rêve (After a Dream)” by Gabriel Faure and the funny “When I was Seventeen ” by Henrik Lillebjörn, accompanied by Nicole Zenos. Emma also plays the clarinet and alto sax.. She attended All State, All County, the Honor Music Society Showcase, did choreography for a school musical, as well as taking a leading role. She is to become a high school choir teacher and stated that “music is home to me” .
She does field placement through JCC working with sixth through 12th grade music choral instruction. Emma has been accepted at SUNY Fredonia, Potsdam, Mercyhurst, the University at Buffalo, Nazareth and Robert Wesleyan.
Lily Zappie from Chautauqua Lake Central School was the next player with a clarinet solo, “Concertino in Eb Major, Opus 26 “by C. M. Weber , accompanied by David Horne. Lilly also plays guitar and has attended All County since fifth grade. She plays in the Jamestown Area Community Orchestra, the John Cross Big Band and has attended Ithaca College Summer Music Academy on the very selective performance track. Her goal is to attain a music performance degree leading to being a professional pit musician. Lily has been accepted to Ithaca college.
Kyrie Mc Carthy, from Fredonia High School was the next performer with a viola composition, “Allemande from suite No. 1 in G major ” by J. S. Bach. Some of her honors are All State Orchestra, Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra, and four years Tri M Music Honor Society. She has also given more than 100 hours of community service and she works as a string body starting fourth graders on their musical journey, which they really enjoy. Kyrie’s goal is performing in a major orchestra and teaching private music lessons to budding musicians. She has been accepted at Ithaca College, Cincinnati Conservatory for Music, and SUNY Fredonia.
Taran Laska, a senior at Frewsburg Central School, performed “Concerto for Trombone ” by Launa Grøndahl, accompanied by Andy Schmidt. Taran also plays the tuba, alto bass, and guitar. He participates in the JCC Concert Band, Jamestown Municipal Band, JCC Jazz Festival, Chautauqua Jazz Camp, Erie Junior Philharmonic as well as lead roles in school musicals. He is also a member of the National Honor Society service projects and basketball and soccer teams. His goal is to be a music teacher. He has been accepted at SUNY Fredonia.
There will be a board meeting on Wednesday, June 10, at 11 a.m. at the Marvin Community House.
