Arbor Day Celebrations Held In Mayville, Chautauqua

A Red Sunset Maple tree was planted at the Chautauqua Municipal Building recently during an Arbor Day celebration.

The Mayville Tree Advisory Committee recently held two Arbor Day celebrations – one for the village and one for the town of Chautauqua.

On April 24, while at the Chautauqua Municipal Building, Town Supervisor Don Emhardt read the official proclamation, proclaiming that day Arbor Day in the town of Chautauqua. The town recently created the Chautauqua Tree Board.

The Red Sunset Maple that was planted was donated by Mayville VFW Post 8647 and its president, Jim Thomas. Chautauqua Lake District School STEM Club students, under the guidance of science teacher Linda Morton, were on hand to see the demonstration given by ISA-Certified Arborist Domenic Liberatore and participate in the planting.

Also on hand were County Legislator Martin Proctor; DEC Forester Rick Silvestro; Bethany O’Hagen, Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy wilds, engagement and stewardship coordinator, and members of the Mayville Tree Advisory Committee.

Saplings of lilac, eastern redbud, ninebark, and serviceberry – all native trees to Chautauqua County – were handed out, courtesy of the Mayville Tree Advisory Committee.

A celebration was also held at the Hometown Heroes Memorial, Mayville Cemetery, to mark Arbor Day in the village.

Mike Smith read a message from Mayor Rick Syper, who was unable to attend.

ISA-Certified Arborist Domenic Liberatore demonstrated proper planting techniques.

DEC Forester Rick Silvestro spoke about the Pink Flair Cherry that was planted.

Bethany O’Hagan from the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy spoke about county programs the Watershed conducts, including tree ID and trail walks.

County Legislator Martin Proctor noted that most of our holidays are about something from the past, but Arbor Day is a holiday that celebrates the future.

The tree was donated by the village of Mayville.
