Six Southwestern Middle School students were recently recognized for their submissions to the annual Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest, a nationwide program sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) that encourages young writers to reflect on themes of patriotism, citizenship, and American values.
This year’s theme, “How Are You Showing Patriotism And Support For Our Country?” inspired essays from students across the district. After review by VFW judges, six Southwestern Middle School students earned top honors.
First place was awarded to Devion Mosher, whose essay focused on the powerful message and clear understanding of everyday patriotism. Second place went to Emma Landy, recognized for her reflections on service and community. Third place was awarded to Breona Miller for her perspective on supporting others and showing pride in her country. Fourth place went to Camden Johnson, followed by Mya Couchenour in fifth place and Kasper Schmincke in sixth.
During the ceremony, a previous Southwestern Patriot’s Pen winner returned to share a message of encouragement with this year’s sixth-grade participants. She urged students to “keep writing, keep thinking, and keep trying,” reminding them they are future leaders, creators, and problem-solvers whose ideas already show great promise.
“I am incredibly proud of these students,” said English teacher Lucia Guarnieri, who guided the sixth graders through the writing and revision process. “They worked hard, thought deeply, and expressed themselves with honesty and maturity. Their essays show that young people truly understand the importance of community, responsibility, and patriotism.”
The John W. Tiffany Post 53 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars provided students the opportunity to participate in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. The recognized students will be honored by the local VFW chapter, and Mosher’s first-place essay will advance to the next level of competition.
