City Student Is National Civics Bee Finalist

John Strassel, a Western New York BEM homeschooled student from Jamestown, will compete before the Chamber of Commerce located in Seneca Falls as a National Civics Bee Finalist.

He will answer a series of questions about the government, the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights and laws. Contestants will elaborate on their essay and give a three-minute speech. The top scorer will win an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C.,

Strassel scored one of the highest locally/regionally of middle schoolers by writing an essay related to civics which included identifying an issue and proposing a solution. The competition was open to public, private and homeschooled students throughout North America. The Civics Bee is a nonpartisan competition designed to promote civic engagement, and knowledge along with skill.

John resides with his parents, Karl Strassel and Etonia Raj. He is assisted in learning by both parents as well as Brionia Raj and Robert Matteson, who ensure national outings that include travel and educational opportunities.
