4-H Youth Participate In Insect Workshop

4-H youth are pictured making their own sweep net during a 4-H Insect Investigators workshop

Youth who enjoy exploring nature recently took part in a 4-H Insect Investigators workshop, a hands-on program designed for young people curious about insects.

During the workshop, youth learned what makes an insect an insect and how insects differ from similar-looking relatives. Participants practiced using a dichotomous key, a scientific tool that helps accurately identify insects based on their physical features, just like real scientists do.

Youth also gained hands-on experience as they made their own sweep nets and learned how to use them to safely and responsibly collect and observe insects outdoors. These activities helped build observation skills while encouraging curiosity and respect for nature.

The workshop was sponsored by the Harmony Haystackers 4-H Club and led by 4-H volunteer Jeanette Almekinder, who guided youth through fun and educational activities.

Starting at $3.50/week.
