Sheridan not interested in having Pomfret run its highway department
When Chautauqua County lawmakers vote on resolution for Pomfret to explore various consolidations, Sheridan officials want them to know they are not interested in being part of a regional highway department.
This past week, Pomfret Supervisor Dan Pacos appeared at different county legislature committee meetings, requesting $50,000 from the county’s Government Reduction Initiative so the town can explore various consolidation opportunities.
Some items the town wants to explore include having a highway department that would service multiple communities, merging the Fredonia and Pomfret courts, merging the Fredonia and Pomfret code offices, and having a regional dog control officer.
During the discussion, Pacos said that Fredonia wants to dissolve its Department of Public Works. The newly formed department could service neighboring municipalities. He gave the example of the towns of Dunkirk, Arkwright and Sheridan. Dunkirk city officials said they are interested in consideration as well.
After Pacos’ comments were published, Sheridan leaders pushed back and said they’re not interested.
“Let it be known that the Town of Sheridan has never had conversations with Supervisor Pacos as to their highway department taking over Sheridan’s highway department,” Sheridan Supervisor Stephen Roach wrote in an email that was also copied to Pacos.
Pacos responded that apparently he had made a mistake. He noted while he was talking to Dunkirk Town Supervisor Shari Miller when Roach was present, he thought both were interested in exploring the possibility of having Pomfret maintain their roads. “If I misunderstood that, I apologize,” he said.
Roach did say they are interested in a regional dog control officer. The resolution notes Pomfret wants to explore the possibility of a dog control officer for Pomfret, Fredonia, city of Dunkirk, town of Dunkirk and Sheridan.
The Chautauqua County Legislature will vote on the funding resolution on Wednesday.
