Mozart Club To Meet April 8

The Mozart Chorus & Susan Turnquist, Oboe, Danica Olson, Director, Andy Schmidt , Accompanist.

The Mozart Club was treated to an afternoon of guitar music recently at the Marvin Community House in Jamestown.

The performers were the Fredonia Guitar Quartet directed by Dr. Nathan Huvard with players Luke Villavicento, Hailey Roca, Mark Dashjevych and Gabrielle Spross.

The afternoon was led off with an arrangement by Dr. Huvard of Serenata Española by Joaquin Maltats . This was originally a piano piece as are many guitar works. Next was an arrangement again by Dr. Huvard of the piano Intermezzo in E-flat Major Op.117/1 by Johannes Brahms .

A suite for guitar, Suite No 2 para guitar, written by Cuban guitarist, Leo Brower, and played with gusto by Luke Villavicencio followed.

Many guitar pieces have been arranged for music other than the guitar by well-known or lesser known guitarists.

A few pieces intended for the guitar, but written by non-guitarist composers are also among the repertoire.

Sevillana is one such piece. Written by Joaquin Turina, inspired by lively Andalusian folk song and dance form,

and dedicated to the great guitarist Andrés Segovia.

This work was played beautifully by Haley Roca.

Closing the program was a work that had a little bit of everything, written by a guitarist, but inspired by music from opera and more. This was the Carmen Fantasy, inspired from Bizet’s Carmen, played with much bravado by all four members of the Fredonia guitar Quartet .

Refreshments were served after the event .

The next meeting of the Mozart club will be on Wednesday, April 8, at 1:30 p.m. at the Philomel Club, 310 Market St., Warren.

Starting at $3.50/week.
