Mayville Senior Citizens To Meet March 5 For Potluck Lunch

MAYVILLE – Forty members, including three guests, attended the Mayville Senior Citizens meeting at the VFW in Mayville recently.

It was the first meeting of the year, as January’s session was canceled due to weather. After an invocation by Dianne Goodrich, members had a soup and sandwich lunch. Members celebrated birthdays for six people in both January (Leah Penswick, John Savage, Sandra White, Priscella Farver, Ruth Neil, Becky Dalziel) and February (Ann Carlson, Darlene Barney, Doug Johnson, Eric Kreidler, Anabel Weise, Sandy Wagner).

Robin Carr, president, called the meeting to order. Goodrich led us in the Lord’s Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Darlene Barney read the December 2025 minutes, which were approved on a motion by Tom DeJoe, seconded by Linda Anderson. The group received thank-you letters from the Mayville Library for a donation in Janice Weltz’s name and from First Baptist Church for a donation to the Santa for Seniors benefit. Treasurer Kathie Sukalac’s report was accepted on a motion by Bonnie J. Johnson, seconded by Lois Maloy, carried.

Robin Carr presented the Senior Council report, highlighting the extension for enrolling in Medicare and Medicare Advantage programs, and announced the Office for the Aging Expo scheduled for May 21. She encouraged all seniors to participate in this expo, which will be held in Fredonia. Given that the club meeting coincides with this event, members voted to cancel their usual meeting in order to attend the expo.

Goodwill Chair Linda Anderson sent 12 birthday cards and two get-well cards. Additionally, she prepared the birthday cake for this month. Tour Director Robin Carr reported on March 31 there is a trip departing Dunkirk Senior Center 8 a.m. which includes Botanical Gardens, Illio DiPaolo’s, Our Lady of Victory Basilica, Broadway Market. Return home at 4 p.m. Cost $110. Another trip is on April 14 to Spragues for a pancake meal, Salamanca Antique Mall, St. Bonaventure Art Museum, and the Zippo Museum. Cost is $122.

Program Director Bill Tornstrom said Earl Freling, a practicing chiropractor from Ripley, will speak at the next meeting on March 5. Bonnie J. Johnson and Karen Heston of the kitchen committee were thanked. Carr requested volunteers for the upcoming meeting, and Patty Snow stepped forward.

Seventeen door prizes were won by Valerie Polloni, Laurie Magnuson, Linda Anderson, Robin Carr, Nancy Peters, Sharon Plucinski, Bill Tornstrom, Dianne Goodrich, Dale Davis, John Weise, Becky Dalziel, Bert Rosage, Darlene Harper, Darlene Barney, David Thorp, Betty Cheney, and Eric Kreidler. Betty Cheney also won the lottery.

Melissa Bartok, Director of the Mayville Library for 16 years, was the guest speaker. Bartok delivered a presentation on the library’s history, from its founding in 1895 to the present day. She discussed the Tuesday Club, where books were stored during the early years, and shared details about the two expansions, one in 1975 and another in 2013. Currently, the library is actively working with youth programs and a homeschooling program.

The next meeting is March 5. It is a potluck luncheon with a dish to pass and an opportunity to sign up for the beef on weck luncheon on April 2.
