Scandinavian Christmas Market Day Is Saturday

The Scandinavian Julmarknad will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jamestown Community College’s Hamilton Collegiate Center and other locations around Jamestown.

The Scandinavian Studies Program is the sponsor for the JCC Julmarknad. Local artisans will offer their creations. There is the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of Scandinavian gifts, items imported from Sweden as well as secondhand Swedish treasures. This year there are at least 27 tables of vendors. In addition, there will be an appearance of Lucia and her court, children’s folk dancing, an opportunity to join traditional ring dancing, live music, a special Fika (coffee or lingonberry drink and a “goodie”), and a door prize. There is no luncheon this year. Admission is free and open to the public.

Another location is Ecklof Bakery, 832 Foote Avenue, open 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Offering freshly made Swedish seasonal items such as vort limpa bread, spritz and pepparkakor cookies, cardamom breads and rolls, Tom and Jerry mix, scorper, almond braids and tarts. The bakery also offers korv burgers, deli meats and cheeses. A door prize drawing will be held.

Peterson Farm on Fluvanna Avenue Extension is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those interested can place an order for Julskinka (Christmas ham), Swedish imported goods, sylta, lutefisk and korv. Visit the Scandinavian Gift Shop with many Swedish items such as books, ornaments, napkins, straw goats, food products and other items. They are the home of Dalahäst Roasters. During Julmarknad, there will be samples of Swedish foods from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Fenton History Center, 67 Washington St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exhibits include the Swedish Room, designed and installed by descendants of Swedish immigrants. Their holiday exhibit is open as well as the center’s gift shop offering historical books, games, puzzles, Christmas ornaments and more. Fenton’s Hall House Research Center has numerous resources on Swedish genealogy.

Jamestown’s own Roger Tory Peterson is honored at his Institute at 311 Curtis St. Ext. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
