JCLC, Partners Promote Safe, Healthy Homes

A local family receives a carbon monoxide alarm and vacuum cleaner from Jamestown Community Learning Council. The agency received a variety of health and safety items from Western New York Children’s Environmental Health Center to share with families in their programs.

A Jamestown Community Learning Council home visitor had just completed a home health and safety check with one of her families, and realized that not only did the home need an updated carbon monoxide detector, but the family was also in need of a vacuum cleaner.

The issues are now resolved, with the help of safety supplies provided to JCLC from The Western New York Children’s Environmental Health Center.

“Our local healthy housing coalition Healthy At Home CHQ connected JCLC with the WNYCHEC, and we were able to select from a number of products to keep our families safe and healthy at home,” said Krista Camarata, JCLC executive director. “Our home visiting staff suggested products needed to best help the families they see in our programs. This year, we were able to provide HEPA vacuums to families to help reduce allergens, childproof locks to keep household chemicals out of reach, fragrance free cleaning and laundry supplies, and carbon monoxide alarms.”

New York State’s 2009 Amanda’s Law requires that CO detectors be installed in all dwellings including single- and multiple-family homes, apartment buildings, hotels/motels, boarding houses, and other residential property types. Landlords are required to provide working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in all rental properties.

WNY CHEC has also provided JCLC with easy-to-follow educational materials covering numerous home health hazards such as managing pests in the home, mold, lead paint, safe cleaning products, and more.

“Simple steps such as controlling pests, managing pet dander, and avoiding other asthma triggers can help children with allergies and asthma to remain healthy and in school and day care, which is very important to their educational and social development,” Camarata said. “We are so grateful to the WNY Children’s Environmental Health Center for all of these resources”
