First Lutheran Announces Christmas Eve Services, Music Performances

First Lutheran Church will have two festive Christmas Eve Worship Services on Wednesday, Dec. 24, with the contemporary service taking place at 4 p.m. and the traditional service at 9 p.m.

The Traditional Service at 9 p.m. will be preceded by a 30-minute vocal and instrumental musical prelude beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The 4 p.m. Contemporary Service will be led by the Sacred Fire Praise Team, Kimberly King, worship leader and coordinator of contemporary worship. Opening songs will be “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” and “O Come All Ye Faithful.” Special music will be “He Shall Reign Forevermore” by C. Tomlin & M. Maher; and “For Unto Us A Child Is Born (“Open the Eyes of My Heart”) by G.F. Handel/P. Baloche/M. Rossback. The service will include a Christmas message by Andrea Magnuson. “Silent Night” will be sung during the candle lighting ceremony, accompanied by guitars. This service will be video recorded and available online via the Sacred Fire First Lutheran Jamestown Facebook page; First Lutheran Church Jamestown Facebook page; and on the church website at www.flcjny.org.

The 8:30 p.m. Instrumental/Vocal Pre-Service Music will include a piano solo by Gail Espinoza, “Canon de Noel” arr. by J. Martin; a vocal solo sung by Scott Costantini, “The Birthday of a King” by W. Neidlinger; Laura Carlson, flautist, will perform “What Child Is This/Coventry Carol” by K. Smith/D. Synder; a vocal duet by Julie & Scott Costantini entitled “Sing We All Noel;” Karen Linn will direct the Good News Hand Bell Ensemble playing “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” arr. by C. Moklebust; Julie Costantini will sing “O Come to My Heart, Lord Jesus” by P. Ambrose; and Julie Livengood, pianist, and Brian Bogey, organist/choirmaster, will perform “Joy to the World” by G. Handel/Arr. L. McKechnie.

The Rev. Luke F. Foder, rector of the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, will be the pulpit guest and celebrant at the 9 p.m. festival worship service with Holy Communion and the traditional candle lighting ceremony. Christmas carols and hymns will be accompanied by organ and brass, Glenn Utter, trumpeter. Congregational carols will include “Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful,” “Angels We Have Heard On High,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “Joy to the World,” and “Once in Royal David.” Communion Hymns will be “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” and “Away in a Manger.” The communion solo will be “O Holy Night” sung by Marika Koch. “Silent Night” will be sung during the traditional candle lighting ceremony. The closing hymn will be “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” followed by the organ postlude “Toccata on ‘Gloria'”.

Choral anthems sung by the First Lutheran Choir will include “Hosianna” (“Hosanna to the Son of David”), by Vogler, sung in Swedish. The choir will also sing John Rutter’s “Christmas Lullaby,” accompanied by Julie Livengood, pianist. The choral anthem for the offertory will be “Gloria! Gloria! By Mary Caldwell. The traditional service will also be recorded on the First Lutheran Church Jamestown Facebook page and the church website www.flcjny.org. The public is welcome to attend.
