Incumbents Win Portland, Silver Creek; Abersold Named Cassadaga Mayor

There were not many contested races in Chautauqua County this year, but the few competitive races there were wrapped up on Tuesday night.

The village of Cassadaga also found itself in a unique situation, as did the town of Cherry Creek. There were also competitive races in Busti, Carroll, Ellington, Lakewood, and Poland.

In both Cherry Creek and Cassadaga, only one candidate for a seat on the board was listed on the ballot, while two seats were open. Write-in results will be released in the coming days.

Becky Rowicki was the only candidate listed on the ballot for the Cherry Creek Town Council. James Abbey ran unopposed as Town Supervisor; Mia Abbey ran unopposed as Town Clerk; and Kenneth Chase ran unopposed as Highway Superintendent.

Cassadaga’s situation is a little more unique. Its lone Village Trustee candidate listed on the ballot was Jeff Frick. The ballot also listed only one mayoral candidate, Rudy Abersold, but a write-in campaign for Nancy Wickmark was mounted to oppose him. Wickmark tied herself to current Mayor Bill Dorman to serve as Trustee via write-in, while Abersold was linked with Frick. Social media chatter also suggested a strong write-in contingent for Danna DuBois, an incumbent who did not initially intend to run for office.

Abersold defeated Wickmark in the race for Mayor with 150 votes for Abersold, compared to 110 write-in votes. The Trustee seats are not as clear-cut, as Frick received 161 votes, but 300 write-in votes were cast for two open seats. Frick likely claimed one of the two seats, but it is unclear as of Tuesday night who claimed the other seat.

In Ellington, the two open Town Council seats went to Kevin Colburn and Barbara Beightol, with 204 and 188 votes, respectively. Third among the three candidates for the two spots was Barbara Miller, with 131 votes. Loren Kent, a Democrat, was elected to the Town Council vacancy with 178 votes.

Robert Smith won the race for Town of Poland Supervisor, defeating Tommy Fox 343-86. Corey Swanson and Elizabeth Smith won the two Town Council seats, each more than doubling the third candidate, Jennifer Fox, who received 120 votes. Bonnita Wallace was elected as Town Clerk after running unopposed.

Republicans won the two seats on the Busti Town Council, as Todd Hanson and Tyler Nelson defeated Democrats Gregory Juul III and Michael Pisko. Hanson had 990 votes, Nelson had 878, Pisko had 545, and Juul had 544. Additionally, Sean Uber was elected Town Justice with 1,077 votes.

Carroll had three candidates in the race for Highway Superintendent: Chad Allison, a Democrat; Michael Walker, a Republican; and Terry Eckman, a Conservative. The winner was Allison with 460 votes, compared to 367 for Walker and 64 for Eckman. The rest of the races in Carroll were unopposed. Timothy Burkett was elected Town Supervisor; Paul Oyer was elected to a vacancy on the Town Council; and John Barber and Justin Lingenfelter were elected to the Town Council.

Scott Schrecengost was elected as Mayor of Celoron, without opposition. Joshua Glover and Michael Moss were the only candidates for two Village Trustee seats on the ballot, but 158 write-in votes were received. Moss received 121 votes, while Glover only received 46 votes.
